Apart from a thorough knowledge of position fixing and plotting the course requires a good understanding of latitude and longitude.
There is no where and no company providing an ocean theory course as good as this one. I have had nothing but fantastic feedback for this comprehensive detailed course.

Can I learn it at sea?
You can learn to use a sextant and bring down the sun to the horizon at midday on many of the ocean voyages with Classic Sailing, but few crew or skippers have the time to go through all the calculations to give yourself a position.
Whilst you need a internet connection to work through this course and communicate with your instructor, once you have the knowledge and procedures, it is possible to set yourself up to practice your astro navigation at sea. Ocean going ships have to carry a sextant and tables, even in these days of GPS.
