Pre-course requirements

Students wishing to achieve the RYA Ocean theory certificate Ocean Yachtmaster should be at Coastal / Yachtmaster level with their exiting theory.

Even with lots of sailing experience, it would be difficult to complete this course without any formal theory training. We have tried to teach ourselves over the years but you really need someone to answer questions...and this course can provide that, even at a distance.

Apart from a thorough knowledge of position fixing and plotting the course requires a good understanding of latitude and longitude.

There is no where and no company providing an ocean theory course as good as this one. I have had nothing but fantastic feedback for this comprehensive detailed course.

The animated diagrams show you not only how to do sight reductions but why and how it all works.

Top tips like how to adjust the index mirror of your sextant.

It perfect for those who have a passion for sailing and navigation.

It is not just about finding position from stars and planets, it covers weather, passage planning, watch keeping and much more.

Topics covered include:

  • The earth and the celestial sphere
  • Practical guide to use and care of sextant at sea
  • Meridian altitudes
  • Sun, star and other sights
  • Ocean passage planning

It assumes a sound knowledge of all subjects covered by a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore shore-based course.

There is an exam at the end and a RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory Certificate if you pass. This is recognised internationally.

This course is provided by distance learning experts Navathome (Terms & Conditions)

Can I learn it at sea?

You can learn to use a sextant and bring down the sun to the horizon at midday on many of the ocean voyages with Classic Sailing, but few crew or skippers have the time to go through all the calculations to give yourself a position.

Whilst you need a internet connection to work through this course and communicate with your instructor, once you have the knowledge and procedures, it is possible to set yourself up to practice your astro navigation at sea. Ocean going ships have to carry a sextant and tables, even in these days of GPS.
