Story behind the image
Bark Europa is the only square rigged sailing ship regularly exploring the Southern Ocean and Antarctic Waters. This was an attempt to sail through Antarctic Sound from the Weddell Sea to the West side of the Antarctic Peninsula. We came accross a giant berg with a cavern sized hole in it. At first there seemed no way around, but Captain Klaas found a way.
The photographer spent 4 months before the mast as deckhand on Bark Europa. This Dutch tall ship is known for its global wandering and most autumns sails from Europe to South America for its Southern Hemisphere summer season in Antarctica.
