Story behind the image

A close up of Men's race start at Newquay County Gig Championships 2018.

So close to the beach you can see the surf. The only warning you have is 'Flags Up' from start boat and then its GO.

The gig economy is a term short term work contracts and freelance jobs. Cornwall has always had a large gig economy of builders, hospitality workers and seasonal staff. During the Covid 19 lockdown, the Cornish 'gig economy' suffered as well as the gig rowing - all events were canceled.

Cornish pilot gig rowing is now a highly competitive sport with gig clubs stretching from the Isles of Scilly to SE England. There are even clubs in the Netherlands and Bermuda. A Cornish gig boat is typically made of elm and is 32ft long. With 6 oars over 13ft long they are fast and out training in all weathers.
