Story behind the image

Newquay gig club boat 'Hope' at Newquay County Gig Championships 2018.

At Newquay clubs loan their boats to the event so crews end up racing in unfamiliar boats. There are only minor differences as they are constructed to a single historic design, but the supporter crowds get very confused as to who is in which boat.

Cornish pilot gig rowing is now a highly competitive sport with gig clubs stretching from the Isles of Scilly to SE England. There are even clubs in the Netherlands and Bermuda. A Cornish gig boat is typically made of elm and is 32ft long. With 6 oars over 13ft long they are fast and out training in all weathers.
